Last weekend we had some discussion about making some changes to our workshops, to keep things fresh, learn new skills, and to try to tempt some of you folks who've been MIA into showing up again.

Our next scheduled Workshop is on Saturday August 13th, and we're going to have a Hemden and Hosen sewing party.  Location to be determined (but probably the Hauptmann's house, because he owns many sewing machines).  There isn't anyone in the Guild who couldn't use a spare shirt or another pair of hosen, and there are a few people who desperately need to replace things that have worn out.  So we'll spend the day sewing.  Those who can't sew can help cut or pin.  Or even better, plan to learn, because we really should all have at least the basics of sewing in our skill set.  We're hoping Brittney can do some teaching around cutting and smocking hemden (see what happens when you don't show up, you get volunteered!).

We also talked about the possibility of having the following Sunday be an optional extra sewing day, devoted to outerwear (i.e. cloaks and schaube).

In preparation for that, I'll be making an Osgood's run with my period color swatches in hand.  For those that haven't ever been, Osgood's Textiles in West Springfield has a wide selection of linen and wool in stock.  That will either happen Sunday July 24th or Sunday July 31st (the exact date all depends on if my mother comes to visit in July).

The next workshop after that, Saturday August 27th will be devoted to camp skills that we should all have in our skillsets.  The starting and care and feeding of our campfire.  Rope and knot skills.  Anyone have ideas for other things we should be learning? We're looking for volunteers to do some teaching so that Stephen doesn't always have to carry the load. (Jonathan, we're looking at you for possible rope stuff? Or maybe Eric?)

Hope to see you there!

Sounds awesome. And I would be happy to offer any sewing help to anyone who needs it. I should finally be released from my shows by then so I can actually do fun stuff for me again. Yay!

At least for hemden it is possible to get decent linen a little closer to home. I just picked up a slightly yellow-ish linen (for a colonial shift, but really not all that different from a Hemd) at 50% off at my local JoAnn's. I picked up 5 yards, because even if that is too much for a hemd, it is easy to convert the scraps into aprons, hankerchiefs (which we all should be carying) pouches (for carying your coins, dice, allergy meds.)

Hemd is a great place to start (in my opinion) and we should easily be able to help the folks with fewer sewing skills. As Julie mentioned at Saturday's workshop, we're hoping to base this workshop off some colonial ones where you show up with your fabric, and by the end you have a garment at the point where everyone is able to finish up on thier own, if it is not fully done by the time you leave.

We talked about inviting non-guild members, significant others, and those that might be interested in sewing or possibly joining us at some time in the future, how does that sound to folks?

Its fine with me, and maybe by the end of the day some of the non-guild people may want to join in!

Betsy,

For anyone interested and on the closer end of CT and MA to me, I would be happy to host more sewing days either weekends or during the week at the end of the summer. You know, since I have an open shop full of sewing machines and things.

Alena,

I am completely cool with anybody showing up at the workshops.

As for the Joann's linen, unless they have started carrying a different kind, I wouldn't recommend it for high neck pleatwork hemds. You need to have a very, very (should I say again, very) lightweight linen for them to work out properly. A handkerchief weight as close to sheer as possible is best. Otherwise, the neck gets very chunky, and the body doesn't hang the same way as in the images. (And yes, this is the voice of “drat, well that was a waste of 50 sewing hours” speaking) The Joann's weight is completely fine for a less pleated, lower neckline, but for the high necked hemds, it would not be my recommendation. Just a friendly warning. However, the handkerchief linen from fabrics store is cheaper by the bolt, and if people want to go in on it, it would be a good idea before the workshop.

The 3.5 oz is the finest and softest that has a nice hand. The 20 yd bolt would probably work for 5-6 hemds I would guess.

Brittney, I agree that the normal weight is JoAnn's linen is too heavy, but I promise the stuff I just bough there is incredibly light weight. It is a good thing to point out for folks who have never made one before that you've got to go with really light weight stuff, but not too loose weave, because then it will fall appart the first time you wear it.

Brittney, I'd be willing to get in on the bolt as I need a new hemd and love doing group orders!

Alena,

Yeah, that is why I don't use the really lightweight 2.8 oz. from Fabric-store. Too loose a weave and a bit harsh also. That is cool that JoAnns has a finer linen now. Mine still only has heavier weights, and mostly blends at that.

Alex,

I personally don't need linen right now, I have a good 5…ok…10…fine, fine maybe 15 or 20 yards of various hemd weight linen lying about somewhere. But others might be into a joint purchase.

It looks like I cannot make the august 13th hemd worksop as my show closes on the 14th so I will have a performance to be at. I really wanted to go to, I need hemds!!!

Oh, and I could possibly go along to help with the Osgoods run if it is on the 31st, but definitely not on the 24th. That is the last performance and strike for my show. Us costume people who work other shows, always getting in the way…

Since I don't think pikes near the coast in a hurricane is a good way to “shake things up” in our workshops, is there a hurricane date for this workshop?
