At the first rehearsal we talked about possible banners for the Geld Fahnlein. I have a large amound of gold colored wool that is too light for garb, so we were talking about possibly a gold colored flag with a black set of scales.
I was surfing the Web today looking for heraldic scales and found this page on Wikipedia Commons - http://commons.wikimedia.org/w…..n_heraldry
But then I found something that fits even better, scales with a sword! - http://commons.wikimedia.org/w…..n_heraldry
I rather like the top of this banner ->

Anyone have other banner ideas to toss around?

I don't know if anyone has any experience with silk or not. I find it makes the best banners as it is light and really picks up even the slightest breeze well. I have not seen the material in question but I would think any weight wool would be too heavy for a banner, but I do not know “historically” what materials were used most often.
I have some contact that make silk banners if anyone has an interest I can drop them a line for a quote if we have a design finalized.

How do they do the design? Alena also knows a silk painter who may be able to set us up, but more options is good!
Silk is totally the way to go.

A question for the powers-that-be: Since we're not portraying a Fahnlein that actually existed, how closely need we stick to historical heraldry when considering what our Fahnlein (er, flag) should look like? While I like many of the choices that Julie posted, I'm not sure if any one of them is really perfect for us. Obviously we're not going to toss history aside here, but I think what would fit us best would be a unique design that's historically plausible, if not actually historical. I'd love to see a scales design with a flamberge bihander (Helga-esque) as the center support. And if we do go the scales route, I think it might work better if our scales are overflowing with gold. We don't want to be mistaken for having anything to do with justice (perish the thought!).
Thoughts?

I think we where heading the route of a sword (Helga-esque or otherwise) as the center of the scale any way, but I do like the idea of the scale having gold in it. Maybe one side with gold in it and the other with a heart or a skull. I mean, we were paid to kill people after all…

While we don't have to stick to an actual historical banner, we do have to follow the “laws” of heraldry so that we can prove the design if it's ever challenged. As such, I think a bihander instead of a straight sword would be fine, though we'd have to find loaded scales in a historical representation to be able to use those. I think that may be possible, I'll look around.
It is, however, pretty unlikely we'll find one with a skull

Seems like they're well researched, might help.

Ooo question. Are we going to have a couple of pennants throughout the camp or with us for marches somehow? I figure if we're going to be doing a flag, a couple of black and gold pennants wouldn't be too difficult.
