I've run across a resource available online that I thought I'd share: a modern English translation of the Nibelungenlied, which is an old German folk tail.  It is older than Grimm's and most of us in period would have been familiar with it (like today any one of us could probably tell a rough version of Snow White without too much trouble.) It is available in PDF from here: http://www.yorku.ca/inpar/ under Medieval German.
