The Gardening blog at the cloisters had a really interesting post about medieval cabbage:

http://blog.metmuseum.org/cloi…..lank-post/

Apparently it looked very different from the modern tight round head, and looked more like kale or collards in Medieval Europe.

I also liked the article for the bit at the end where the author admits that they substitute the closer looking Collards, because to leave them out entirely would be to present a distorted picture of the past. In Living History I think we do this a lot, and it is always a comfort to me to know that sometimes it is better to include something that is not quite right, than to omit something important. Just as long as we all keep striving to present as accurate a picture as possible.

Cool link, I must go check out their medicinal plants at some point. Did anyone else see they have a German event coming up? Songs, Sagas, and Legends of Medieval Germany Sunday, March 27, 2011, 1:00 PM
