While researching the vegetables that I planned on putting into my pot for stew this week, I discovered this page. After looking this over I fully intend to put orange carrots into my stew and not feel bad about their historical innacuracy. I am however very sad that there is little to no evidence for rutabagas being in common use pre-1620 or so. I weep little tears into a stewpot lacking in rutabaga. Oh well, golden beets, turnips, and parsnips along with with my orange carrots shall cover the loss for me.

And of course for the first time they had “rainbow” organic carrots in the health food store when I stopped in today. White, and yellow, and purple, oh my. Too expensive for too small a bunch for the stew, but I did consider getting them to leave out on the table 'cause they even had their tops and all. Very period looking.

I'd love to have period colored carrots, but yeah, the expense. *sigh*

They are on the top of my list for things to put in my garden…when I have a house. Maybe in the next couple of years…
