The Medieval Material Culture blog recently had a post about tents. http://larsdatter.com/wordpress/?p=1005

Most of the images that show people eating show them either inside the tent or under an awning, much like our von Reischach family eating under their awning.  As in The Banquet by Albrecht Altdorfer. http://www.photo.rmn.fr/LowRes…..506147.jpg

But in this camp scene (http://www.bildindex.de/bilder…..96e06a.jpg) you can see, off to the right side, a lean-to like structure.  But it looks like the roof is made of boards.  (You'll also note the cone tent in the same area of the camp.)

But then I saw this picture (http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac……016574.JPG) of the camp of Charles V (our beloved emperor!).  Where you can see in one of the detail images what is clearly a canvas tent being used for dining, and another for cooking (butchering).  (http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac&…..016576.JPG)

Whoot!

(Edited due to wonky HTML.  grrrr.)
